Al-Ettifaq have failed in their attempts to sign Jota from Al-Ittihad in the final minutes on deadline day of the Saudi transfer window.

The Dammam-based side have been linked with a move for Jota with Steven Gerrard reportedly demanding the board to bring the Portuguese in the summer.

Previous reports had confirmed that Jota was out of Nuno Santo’s plans at Al-Ittihad despite joining them just over two months ago.

The 24-year-old reportedly insisted on staying in Jeddah despite the club making it clear that he has no place in the starting lineup.

After signing Real Betis defender Luiz Felipe on deadline day, Al-Ittihad were desperate to find another club for Jota as Al-Ettifaq were keen on a late transfer move.

According to a report by Asharq Al-Awsat, Al-Ettifaq agreed terms with Al-Ittihad for Jota just 30 minutes before the transfer window closed.

However, the Commandos were dealt a blow as they failed to register the player in time and the deal collapsed as a result of the delay in paperwork.

Jota will now remain at Al-Ittihad but the Portuguese may not find any game time before January after being left out of their squad.

Al-Ittihad have a total of 10 non-homegrown players in their squad which exceeds the limit granted by the Saudi Pro League regulations of just eight.

A potential move for Jota will now have to wait until January as Al-Ettifaq look to resume their league campaign without the former Celtic forward.

Al-Ettifaq have already made a number of additions in the summer signing Jordan Henderson, Jack Hendry, Moussa Dembele, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Demarai Gray from Everton.
