Jordan Henderson completed the move to the Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq this summer and it is a move that has generated controversy.

The English midfielder decided the time was right to leave Liverpool after 12 years at the club but it seems the former Sunderland youngster is enjoying life in the Middle East.

The former Reds skipper recently came under fire despite insisting his move to the Middle East was not financially motivated when he spoke to The Athletic last month but this has not stopped people criticising the midfielder.

However, regardless of his stance, what can not be disputed is Henderson now performing to crowd numbers less than those seen in the National League.

His latest outing came in Al Ettifaq’s 3-1 win at Abha Club on Saturday, a result that keeps Steven Gerrard’s side in fifth place, three points adrift of the Saudi Pro League leaders Al Hilal.

The incredibly small number of fans that the Englishman plays in front of has begged the question of whether the midfielder has made the wrong career decision.

Has Henderson made a mistake

The English midfielder has certainly been criticised for deciding that the best move for his career was the Middle Eastern side.

However, this notion that the midfielder only joined the club for money is a tad harsh.

Yes, the Englishman has been offered a handsome salary to join Steven Gerrard’s side but the prospect of building the team there and potentially being part of a new and exciting league was surely another factor in his thinking.

The league is getting better with the more high-profile players that join the club and indeed the division means that Henderson and Gerrard could be the people who make the league what it is.
